I Timothy 4:7-8, says, "7) But refuse and avoid irreverent legends (profane and impure and godless fictions, mere grandmothers’ tales) and silly myths, and express your disapproval of them. Train yourself toward godliness (piety), [keeping yourself spiritually fit]. 8) For physical training is of some value (useful for a little), but godliness (spiritual training) is useful and of value in everything and in every way, for it holds promise for the present life and also for the life which is to come." As the world becomes more wicked and darkness surrounds us, it is vital that we live a godly life. In verse seven, we are told to "...train yourself toward godliness (piety), keeping yourself spiritually fit." To train, we must practice doing godly things.
The word godliness means, "to be devout, a Godward attitude, does that which is well pleasing to Him." So to live a life of godliness is to keep ourselves spiritually fit and do the things that are pleasing to God. To do this we must understand that spiritual training, just like physical training, takes discipline. There are times we will have to make some tough decisions and say no to what is wrong and yes to what God says to do.
When we make a quality decision that we are going to live godly in an ungodly world, we will face opposition. The good news is as we train ourselves in godliness, the Holy Spirit will empower us and help us to be overcomers. We also find that according to verse eight godliness is profitable. That means we will move over into the realm of God's blessing in our lives. So as we commit ourselves to godliness, we see that it becomes profitable in this life and in the one to come.
I believe it is God's will to prosper the whole man as we live a godly life. Study the outline, "Godliness is Profitable." I believe these truths will transform your life.
